First & foremost; learn to love your skin. So if you have freckles, beauty marks, natural discolouration, or a dark complexion, own it, it’s you and it’s beautiful. So focused on the things that you can change and not on the things that you can’t. Skincare is about enhancing what you have and not about hiding what’s there.
All of us aspire for great skin with a clear complexion and are willing to spend a great deal of time and money in trying to achieve it. I think a lot of the times we end up looking for this complicated solution because in our minds’ getting a clear skin complexion is a complicated problem. Actually it’s not. It may be counter-intuitive given the advertising onslaught of so many complex, scientific products that you are exposed to but the solution is quite simple. Here are some of our tips on how to keep your skin clear, healthy and glowing.
Start from inside
Nutrition: Healthy and glowing skin primarily comes from the inside and not from the outside so you may have heard moms and other senior people say that certain vitamin and mineral supplements can help with achieving a clear complexion. Other people might say that certain food ingredients like celery, cucumber, mint and berries help with achieving clear skin. It’s all true but not in isolation. No one superfood or compounds can take care of it all. Your nutrition and your diet as a whole is what determines the health and vitality your skin. This is something you can experience on your own very easily. Watch yourself when you end up digging into those oily and sugary pleasure foods regularly and see how the skin starts breaking making your complexion dull and muddy. While a series of wholesome meals for a couple of weeks can really help you achieve repair and enhancement of the skin. So look out at overall hydration and make sure you are getting enough fluids, smoothies & fruits. Making sure to eat foods that are high in fibre like fruits, veggies, whole grains, flax seeds and getting a healthy dose of probiotics like plant-based yoghurts and preservative is a blessing for your skin.
Regular physical activity helps to keep things moving too: It comes as no surprise that sweating and regular physical activity aids skin cell construction as when we exercise we increase blood flow to all areas of our body and skin is included in that too. So with increase blood flow; increased oxygen and nutrients get delivered to the cells and it’s also an opportunity for the cells to get rid of any toxins hanging onto them. So more physical activity is akin to healthier skin. Exercise also decreases stress and we all know how much more our skin can breakout when we are going through stressful times. So, it’s about being introspective and keeping watch on the stress gauge and making sure that some fun activities, walks, tea sessions, wine tastings etc are a part of your weekly regime.
What can be done on the outside?
If you have already found a product that works well for your skin; a moisturiser, a cleanser or a face wash, great! Stick to it. But we are not big fans of using complex cosmetics to take regular care of your skin. We recommend keeping things real simple. Keeping your skin clean, exfoliated and moisturised is good enough to keep it looking awesome.
You may just purchase an exfoliating glove that can be used with a simple least acidic soap or facewash. Just gently scrub to remove any dead skin or debris. Coconut oil, honey are fantastic moisturisers that offer deep relief to your skin’s hydration and breathing needs. We are not great fans of wearing makeup every day as you don’t want it to become a part of your real self. It’s not a problem to wear a foundation on a special occasion but certainly not as part of your daily routine. Please let your skin breathe and you will find that over a few weeks you won’t feel the need for regular foundation application. It’s ok to be natural and owning your skin with utmost love. Deepika Padukone in a recent interview was quoted saying
I don’t like too much foundation and I don’t like layering too much. I like my freckles to show through or any discoloration that I might have on my skin. I really don’t mind you know all of those things coming through because when it’s cakey I get really conscious and want to see my skin.
