Here are some excerpts from a detailed chat that Harper Bazar did with Deepika Padukone and her Makeup Artist, Sandhya Shekar & Hairstylist, Gabriel Georgiou recently. It offers a detailed account of how special the team-aspect of putting together a great look truly is. How Deepika’s sense of makeup & hair has evolved from her early days. We think it’s a wonderful conversation to be a part of for all the to be brides and fashionistas. So dig in and enjoy.
How important is this whole feeling of looking good for you? How much of a difference does a professional intervention mean?
“I think everything that I do with my skin, hair and everything to do with feeling and looking beautiful and glamorous is a very important part of who I am. I feel like we all grow and we all evolve and sometimes things that you don’t like but embrace later. For example, I never liked a centre parting slick and now we do it all the time. There was a time when I didn’t like doing anything under the eye and now I love sort of you know just that little definition under the eye with mascara. What has helped is that I’ve really consciously tried to stay away from is to learn to do my hair and make-up all by myself. I really would leave that my style included be left to the professionals.”

Deepika’s Makeup Artist, Sandhya Shekar recalls “So I had done about close to 8 years in the industry and I remember that I was not interested in doing celebrity makeup. But I also remember that the only person that I was keen to work with was Deepika. And one day I get this call because I worked with her stylish Alina and I think she had suggested me, so her team called saying that we want you to do her makeup for a small event. It was an instant connection as she was extremely warm and courteous.”
Recalling her evolution as a style diva, Deepika says,
“I went through a phase when clean beautiful skin, focus on the lashes and a bright red mouth became my signature look. I remember the very first movie that I did; Om Shanti Om, Shanti Priya the character that I played was yesteryear heroin and to help me look like a yesteryear heroine the eyeliner was the focus and the eyeliner that we used in that movie became extremely popular after that. Brides would go up to every makeup artist during their wedding day and say that they wanted the Shanti Priya eyeliner. It was the signature sort of winged liner that I did for many many years”.

What would be music to the ears of those who promote natural or minimal makeup, Deepika recounts her current mindset about makeup,
I don’t like too much foundation and I don’t like layering too much. I like my freckles to show through or any discoloration that I might have on my skin. I really don’t mind you know all of those things coming through because when it’s cakey I get really conscious and want to see my skin.

Adding more insights to Deepika’s current preferences, Sandhya, Makeup Artist adds,
“Her signature look would be the no-makeup look. I don’t have to put like more than two drops of foundation on her skin. Natural warm tones are her go-to colours in terms of blush. We generally stick to you know colours like these which are warmer which are closer to her skin tone. One secret, she’s excellent at doing her own brows it’s been 2 1/2 years and I’ve never done her eyebrows ever that’s because I trust her the way she does it.”
Her Wedding Look: Hairstyling
Her hairstylist, Gabriel Georgiou recalls the entire concept of delivering her stunning looks and outlines the deep thinking that needs to go behind hairstyling a bride.
“Wedding obviously was one of her biggest days in life and being a part of that was a lot of fun. She trusts me a lot obviously, so we didn’t have to do any trials or anything like that, but we did have like a small wine and cheese party at a place where we were just discussing looks. It’s a very special day so you know there are photos, there’s video, there’s all sort of stuff you know and the long days after the events with all the partying, the dinners; she’s gotta look fantastic. The hairstyle has to last the whole thing. The last thing you want is to have her hair coming out and bothering her face. So the hair had to be simple yet super chic and very sturdy so that you know it held all the traditional Indian wedding jewellery and carry the veil on top and you know all that stuff that went along with it.”

Her Wedding Look: Makeup
Her makeup artist, when asked about her approach to Deepika’s look, says, “A lot of times it was picking up the tones from the outfit that she was wearing. So she was wearing a lot of these beautiful designer outfits from Sabyasachi and I think one or two from likes Abujani as well. It was like I was trying to push my own limits with you know Indian wear which I was very happy about. So creatively it’s was a very enriching experience yet nerve-wracking. She is somebody who completely trusts me with what I do and that’s something we’ve worked on for the last few years that we’ve been working together. I wanted all of it to come together on her special day.”

Talking about the tipping point of her style evolution, Deepika says “I feel, I really came into my own in 2011-12 while I was doing this movie called cocktail and played this character “Veronica”. Up until then, I was conducting myself in a way that one is expected to or speak a certain way or dress a certain way and I feel like through that movie and through that character, I actually somewhere started becoming comfortable with myself. And, I felt like from then on, whether it’s anything big or small, any decision or choice that I’ve made in my life I feel like I’ve been honest in those choices. I feel truly liberated from that time on and I feel like it shows in my characters in my movies and everything else that I do.”
